Hamburg's final change sees Andre Hahn replace Ekdal. Hahn has some goals to his name this campaign, and is sure to provide more of an attacking punch.

Arp is being asked to do a lot up top, often left isolated as the ball is played into him, with Kostic roaming. The substitute is being asked to hold the ball up amidst a swarm of yellow shirts, and it's simply not working.

They have scored a club-record goals vs HSV and have won the last four meetings by a three-goal margin. Jung becomes the first player booked on the day.

Dortmund are looking stronger on the front foot, posing a greater threat with each attack. Pulisic has a chance to turn from provider to scorer, but scuffs contact again as he bounces an effort wide from 15 yards.

Mahmoud Dahoud comes on here just past the hour mark to replace Kagawa, who has limped off with an injury. Hamburg seem to have relieved the spell of Dortmund pressure, at least for the time being.

They're getting forward with a bit of urgency, Arp at the centre of things, but they've lacked a good final ball.

Dortmund remain in the ascendency here, dominating possession as they go in search of a second to essentially kill the game.

Hamburg are in a sticky spell here and need to start getting some momentum back on their side or they will be in danger of falling out of this match.

Sejad Salihovic also comes on, replacing Hunt. It's a crushing blow for Hamburg, who have defended studiously up to this point.

They are very unlucky to be behind here, but it's not exactly an unfamiliar position for them. Hamburg were down in each of their last two matches, before finishing them That's three goals already for Batshuayi since arriving in Dortmund, in just his second match right now!

He's had little to feast on in this game, but he got an opening there and snatched at it! That's what being a great striker is all about! Batshuayi is a rejuvenated striker in the Bundesliga!

Pulisic is picked out in the area and his scuffed shot winds up being the perfect cross for Batshuayi, who slides in to knock it home at the fat post!

Hamburg get us back underway in Dortmund! It's been an expert display from relegation-threatened Hamburg through 45 minutes as they have kept Dortmund at arm's length.

What looked a straightforward three points for the hosts on paper has resulted in anything but, as they've been held without a shot on target in the first half, while coming under some pressure at the other end.

Douglas Santos does brilliantly out on the left to carve out space with a quick turn and place a cross right into the path of Kostic, but the striker's can't get his effort through on goal from point-blank range!

Dortmund camped out in attack as we enter the final couple of minutes before the break, but there's simply no way through for them. Hamburg have been able to block off all passageways into the area, clogging the lanes and forcing the hosts to the periphery.

Into the dying stages of the first half and Dortmund are still searching for their first shot on target.

Batshuayi has been starved of service, made to work hard for the ball, and he's able to feed off some scraps here, but scuffs the final contact as he misses the target from 20 yards.

They have netted 70 goals in Dortmund — more than any other visiting side. Great play by Dortmund! Leitner quickly gets involved in the action and immediately whips a wonderful cross-field lofted pass over to the right flank, where it finds Passlack.

The youngster had made a great run forward and ends up heading the ball across goal after meeting it on the right-hand side. A lofted pass forward finds Gregoritsch, who brings the ball down well before spinning and finding Ilicevic over on the left wing.

The Croatian picks up the ball in space and immediately sprints towards the left-hand side of the penalty area before trying to beat Burki at his near post, but the wing.

Vital interception by Ostrzolek! Dortmund move the ball around patiently just outside of the Hamburg penalty area, with Sahin playing an important role in the attacking move.

He finds Pulisic, who then quickly moves the ball on to Castro on the edge of the box, but just as the midfielder is about to.

The pace of the game has severely dropped over the past few minutes, as Dortmund are finding it far too easy with their one-man advantage and two-goal lead.

As a result, they are looking to hold on to possession as much as possible inside the Hamburg half of the pitch, but their comfortable lead has.

Dortmund have decided to make a double substitution. The first player to come on is Aubameyang, who takes the place of Castro for the final 15 minutes of the game.

Hamburg are really struggling with injuries today, and now it's Ekdal who is the latest player to go down with what looks like a nasty ankle twist.

With Lasogga and Muller already looking as if they're going to spend a significant amount of time out of action, Labbadia can't afford to lose yet anoth.

Aubameyang breaks into the left-hand side of the Hamburg box and darts towards the byline before firing a cross-cum-shot towards the near post, where Spahic is there to head the ball behind for a corner.

The set-piece is taken short before Pulisic curls a dangerous cross into the heart of the penalt. Hamburg are sitting incredibly deep as they try their hardest not to fall even further behind in what has been a thoroughly disappointing afternoon for them.

Dortmund are barely breaking a sweat as they patiently move the ball around deep inside the visitors' half of the pitch, but, luckily for Laba.

Dortmund come back at Hamburg once again and win themselves a free-kick in a very dangerous position 30 yards away from goal.

Aubameyang steps up and tries to test Drobny with a side-footed strike that he attempts to dip over the head of the Czech goalkeeper, but he doesn't strike it well enough and.

Great chance for Ramos to make it ! Aubameyang breaks into the left-hand side of the penalty and weaves his way down the byline before chipping a lovely cross right on to the head of the Colombian striker.

He rises high and meets the ball well before trying to beat Drobny, but his effort ends up. There it is! Ramos has scored his second! Kagawa and Leitner play a lovely one-two on the edge of the Hamburg penalty area before the Japan international forces Drobny into making a strong diving save.

The goalkeeper can only push the ball out to the Colombian striker, however, and he's easily. Vital block by Spahic!

Pulisic runs at the Hamburg defence and easily breaks into the left-hand side of the box on an excellent run. He then fires a low pass across the face of goal that misses the outstretched foot of Ramos and looks set to find Aubameyang at the far post, but the Bosnian centre-ba.

Great save by Drobny! Aubameyang is the latest Dortmund player to test the Czech goalkeeper with a thumping shot from the left-hand side of the penalty after finding himself in a pocket of space in front of goal, but the veteran goalkeeper does wonderfully well to push the strike round the near post.

The Bundesliga celebrated its 40th anniversary on 24 August with a match between "The Dinosaur", as the club has been affectionately nicknamed due to its old age, and Bayern Munich , the league's most successful side.

In , Seeler was named Footballer of the Year for the third time. FC Kaiserslautern 2—0 to win the trophy for the second time in the club's history.

This was then bettered in —76 with a second-place finish. Keegan's first season at the club saw the team slip to a disappointing tenth place, however, the player himself was named European Footballer of the Year.

As had happened 19 years ago, HSV faced Spanish opposition in the semi-finals. In , Austrian coach Ernst Happel was appointed as Zebec's permanent replacement.

The run stretched across 36 games and remained a Bundesliga record until November , when it was broken by Bayern Munich. A third Meisterschale followed at the end of the —83 season , with HSV defending their title against local rivals Werder Bremen on goal difference.

The Brazilian club took home the trophy with a 93rd minute winning goal. Both —85 and —86 were disappointing seasons for HSV with the club finishing fifth and seventh respectively.

In , midfielder Felix Magath , who had played for the club for ten years and scored the winning goal in the European Cup Final , retired from professional football.

In the early s, HSV found itself in financial trouble. After a fifth-place finish in —91 , HSV finished in the bottom half of the Bundesliga in four consecutive seasons.

On 13 October , Thorsten Fink was appointed as coach [28] with the team in the relegation zone after losing six of their opening eight matches.

In HSV's first nine games under Fink they were unbeaten, going into the winter break in 13th place. In —13 , HSV recorded a much improved seventh-place finish, in large part due to Heung-min Son 's ability to score crucial goals.

During the season , however, the team equaled the club's record Bundesliga defeat, losing 9—2 at the Allianz Arena to Bayern Munich.

Fink was replaced on 25 September by Bert van Marwijk , [31] who in the same season was replaced by Mirko Slomka on 17 February Under Slomka, the club narrowly avoided its first ever relegation from the Bundesliga in May by defeating Greuther Fürth on the away goals rule in a play-off.

Eventually in the next season Hamburg once again changed managers due to a poor start of the season firing Slomka on 15 September. His successor Josef Zinnbauer held the job up until 22 March and was replaced by interim coach Peter Knäbel.

Labbadia achieved only two points in the first ten games of the —17 season and was replaced by Markus Gisdol who had a shaky start but managed to get 20 points in 9 games from the 19th match day to the 28th match day.

On the last match day, Hamburg avoided the relegation play-offs and stayed in the Bundesliga. FC Köln.

However, eight games followed without a single win. At the end of the first half of the season, HSV was in second last place in the table.

After two defeats in the first two games of the second half, coach Markus Gisdol was dismissed. HSV hired Bernd Hollerbach , a former player of the club, as a new coach.

After seven games without a win and a 6—0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich , he was also dismissed. On the day of his appointment, he dismissed the sports director Jens Todt.

The club hired former successful HSV player Thomas von Heesen as a sports consultant until the end of season. He should take over a part of the duties for the dismissed Jens Todt.

Until then, he was very successful in the Regionalliga Nord fourth league and was with his team at the top of the table. With four wins and an offensively minded style of play, the coach convinced the club and received a two-year contract.

After the disastrous season in the —18 Bundesliga under three different coaches, a final day win over Borussia Mönchengladbach was not enough to escape relegation after Wolfsburg won against Köln.

It started when about HSV fans interrupt a St. Pauli concert because it took place on the "HSV-side" of the Reeperbahn.

After fans of FC St. Pauli attacked HSV fans working on a choreography for the game and destroyed parts of it, some HSV fans threatened them by hanging figures in the colours of the rival at several bridges throughout the city.

In addition, one day later there was a march of about 80 HSV-Ultras across the Reeperbahn , where insulting chants against St.

Especially in the s, multiple players transferred between the two clubs. As Hannover and Bielefeld fans have affinities as well, all three clubs are sometimes called the Nordallianz Northern Alliance despite the fact that the city of Bielefeld is not technically located in Northern Germany.

In addition, some fan groups maintain good contacts with the fourth division team VfB Lübeck , whose fans also have an aversion to St.

Pauli and Holstein Kiel. In , HSV helped the club, which was threatened by insolvency, with a free friendly match, in which the team competed with several national players to attract as many spectators as possible and left the entire earnings for VfB Lübeck.

The club crest is a black and white diamond on a blue background. These were the colours of SC Germania. The use of the blue background suggests a link with Hamburg's maritime tradition as the Blue Peter flag signal meaning "All Aboard" or "Outward Bound" is a white rectangle on a similar blue background.

In contrast, the team's home kit is white jerseys and red shorts, which are the colours of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

As a result, the team's most common nickname is "die Rothosen" the Red Shorts. Because of its age and having been ever-present in the top flight of German football, HSV is also known as der Dinosaurier the Dinosaur and currently uses a dinosaur mascot called "Hermann" named after long-time club physiotherapist Hermann Rieger for marketing purposes.

Hamburg's three Bundesliga championships entitle the club to display one gold star of the "Verdiente Meistervereine". Under the current award system, their pre-Bundesliga championships are not recognized and so they are not entitled to the second star of a five-time champion.

After the replay of the championship final in had to be abandoned due to the opponents no longer having enough players on the ground, the German Football Association DFB requested HSV to renounce the title, which the club did.

During his first season with Hamburger SV —01 , Sergej Barbarez became the top scorer for his club with 22 goals and joint top scorer of the Bundesliga with Ebbe Sand.

Into the final 10 minutes now and it's still far from over in Dortmund. The visitors have some punch left in them still, and they're starting to throw caution to the wind as they commit more bodies forward.

They have taken four points from their last eight games — a joint league-low same as Stuttgart. Hamburg narrowly escape as Dahoud surges forward teasingly, playing a ball through the legs of Mathenia towards the far post, but Pulisic arrives a second too late or he would have had the simplest of tap-ins!

Hahn shows good determination to get on the end of a throughball, but can't generate much power as he pokes the ball towards goal.

Pressure stays on and Sakai finds a pocket of space to flash a low delivery across the face of goal, but Arp just can't get to it!

Nonetheless, there's life here for Hamburg! Dortmund make their second change as well, with Reus going off to a standing ovation.

He lasts just over 70 minutes in his first taste of action following a nine-month injury absence, replaced by his team-mate and close friend Mario Gotze.

They have netted 70 goals in Dortmund — more than any other visiting side. Toljan has been exposed a bit on the flank, but he does expertly here.

He sticks with Sakai, who had beaten Pulisic out wide, and not only blocks his attempted cross, but wins his side a goal-kick.

You can sense the unrest coming from these home supporters as Dortmund largely saunter around in the final third, offering precious little quality.

A stray cross runs behind for a free-kick, eliciting some groans from the crowd, with Reus clapping and shouting to get his team energised.

Hamburg have been the better side over the last 10 minutes or so, if not longer. They continue to really limit Dortmund's time on the front foot, and have been growing in stature in attack.

Vital tracking from Douglas Santos, who tracks back superbly to snuff out a dangerous-looking chance for Dortmund on the break.

Hamburg's work ethic has been terrific today, and they've done an excellent job of getting bodies back in defence. Hamburg orchestrate their best chance of the match as they attack down that right flank again.
